ABCD and Popular Education

Economies in cities are dominated by extra-local corporations. The question is “how do communities start to take back control from these corporations?” The answer lies in a methodology for community development called asset-based community development or ABCD. ABCD assumes that people in communities already have skills and talents, but that those skills and talents are under utilized. It is an evolution of popular education, which we will spend the first half of the semester discussing.

Popular education is about creating learning communities. These communities are non-hierarchical and focus on learning from each other and not from an all-knowing “teacher.” Thus, the relationships built by popular education serve as the foundation for creating a community based economy.

Such an economy would focus on serving the needs of the community as determined by the community. It is not a top down planned economy and still relies on the market to distribute goods. However, the market is not strictly global, though it can be, but is shaped by what the community wants and needs in terms of goods and services. The point is to build wealth for the community, to capture the wealth that is leaving via transnational corporations and to provide needed goods and services to the community at a fair price, though not necessarily cheap. Ultimately we want a network of community-owned business that form an economic ecosystem that is resilient and can defend against outside corporations.

This course includes twelve weeks of live webinars that will happen between September 1 and November 23, 2019.
